DOT Required Documents In Vehicle: The Full Checklist

You see the flashing lights in your mirror, or you pull into a weigh station, and suddenly you are digging through your cab trying to remember exactly what paperwork you are supposed to have. Every commercial driver has been there.

Knowing the DOT-required documents in vehicle checks ahead of time saves you from that scramble and keeps you from racking up avoidable violations.

License and Medical Certification

At the top of the list is your Commercial Driver License matched to the class and endorsements your vehicle requires. Alongside it, a current Medical Examiner Certificate proving you are physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

Registration, Insurance, and Authority

Your vehicle registration needs to match your plate numbers and VINs for both tractor and trailer. You also need a certificate of insurance and, if operating under a lease, a copy of that agreement. Keep your operating authority and USDOT number registration accessible.

Inspection and Hours of Service Records

Your Driver Vehicle Inspection Report documents pre-trip and post-trip checks. You also need proof of your current annual DOT inspection and your hours of service records, whether paper logs or ELD data.
