How Often Should A Truck Regen? A Complete Guide
You are rolling down the highway and your dash lights up, letting you know your truck is regenerating. Maybe this is the third time this week, and you are wondering if that is normal or a sign something is wrong.
Figuring out how often a truck should regen is one of those questions every diesel owner eventually asks. The answer depends on specific factors, and once you understand them, you will know exactly what your truck is telling you.
What Regen Does
Your diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust. Regeneration is the process that burns that soot off before it clogs the filter. Passive regen happens during sustained highway driving. Active regen kicks in when the ECU detects the soot load has crossed a threshold.
Normal Regen Frequency
For a truck running mostly highway miles, regen cycles typically happen every two hundred to five hundred miles. Trucks running short stop-and-go routes regen more frequently because they rarely reach the sustained temperatures needed for passive regen.
When Frequency Signals a Problem
If you see active regens every fifty to eighty miles, that is a red flag pointing to excessive soot production or incomplete regen cycles. Both deserve a diagnostic look.
Avanti Fleet diesel technicians diagnose DPF and regen issues for trucks throughout Vancouver and Portland. Our service team can tell you whether your regen frequency is normal or a warning sign.
